Vegan FAQ
Short answers to the questions people actually ask — from honey and B12 to kebab shops.
Basics
What is veganism?
Veganism is a way of living that seeks to exclude — as far as possible and practicable — all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose.
Ingredients and products
Is honey vegan?
No. Bees make honey for the hive, not for toast. Veganism excludes animal products — including beeswax and pollen. Swaps: maple, date syrup, agave.
Nutrition
Do vegans need vitamin B12?
Yes. B12 is not reliably present in unfortified plant foods. Reliable sources are a supplement and fortified foods (some plant drinks, cereals, fortified nutritional yeast).
Nutrition
Where do vegans get protein?
From legumes, soy (tofu, tempeh), seitan, nuts, seeds and grains. A balanced plant diet meets needs for most healthy people; you do not need complete protein in every meal.
Ingredients and products
Is wine vegan?
It depends on fining. Grapes are plants, but wine may be fined with egg white, casein, gelatin or isinglass. Vegan wines use bentonite, carbon, or no fining, plus a vegan mark.
Ethics and environment
Do plants feel pain — and does that defeat veganism?
Plants respond to stimuli but have no nervous system or brain. Even if they “felt”, a meat diet uses more plants (as feed) than a vegan diet. The argument does not cancel reducing animal suffering.
Eating out
What can a vegan order at a kebab shop?
Falafel, if it is fried without lard and not egg-battered. Ask about the sauce (garlic sauce is often yoghurt or mayo) and whether the grill is shared with meat. More Polish kebab shops now offer falafel and seitan.
Shopping and labels
Is a vegan diet expensive?
The staples — groats, lentils, cabbage, potatoes, pasta, apples — are cheaper than meat. Ready-made swaps (cheese, deli slices) cost more. You can eat vegan cheaply or expensively, like any diet.
