UK plans to end CO2 stunning of pigs as government opens consultation
plantbasednews.orgThe government proposes a two-to-three-year transition and describes pigs as 'highly sentient and intelligent animals' capable of experiencing pain and fear. According to Compassion in World Farming, CO2 stunning rose from 52% in 2013 to 90% in 2025. Plant Based News notes that recurring CO2 shortages are likely also a factor.
The consultation comes about a year after the independent Animal Welfare Committee found 'significant' evidence that CO2 causes pigs 'avoidable' pain, respiratory distress and fear, and recommended phasing it out within at least five years. More than two decades ago the Farm Animal Welfare Council already called the method unacceptable.
CIWF UK welcomed the move. Laura Hellwig of Viva! stressed that welfare reform is not the final destination: 'If the Government's goal is to end suffering, replacing one stunning method with another is not the answer.'
