Is wine vegan?

Short answer

It depends on fining. Grapes are plants, but wine may be fined with egg white, casein, gelatin or isinglass. Vegan wines use bentonite, carbon, or no fining, plus a vegan mark.

Fining is not always on the label. Since 8 December 2023, EU wines must list ingredients and nutrition (often via a QR code), and allergens from egg and milk fining agents must be declared on the label if they remain in the wine. Gelatin and isinglass (fish bladder) do not have to be listed, because as processing aids they do not stay in the product.

So their absence from the ingredient list does not prove a wine is vegan. A “vegan” mark (for example V-Label), information from the producer or the Barnivore database give certainty.
