Beef production in Brazil drives global deforestation.

In recent years, beef production in Brazil has become one of the key factors contributing to global deforestation. Since the beginning of the 21st century, an area of forest equal to five times that of the United Kingdom has been cleared to create space for pastures. Over the last two decades, 41% of global deforestation has been caused by beef production, with about 65% of this phenomenon occurring in Brazil.

Surprisingly, most of the beef produced in Brazil is consumed domestically rather than exported. Over the past 50 years, domestic demand for beef has doubled, currently reaching a level three times higher than the European average. Only 15% of production is intended for export, with China and the United States being the largest importers. In light of the growing demand for beef, it is essential to take action to curb deforestation.
