Do vegans need vitamin K2?
Short answer
There is no evidence that vegans need a separate K2 supplement. Recommendations cover vitamin K as a whole, and its main dietary source is K1 from leafy greens and vegetable oils. K2 is found mainly in natto and other fermented foods.
Natto (fermented soy) is the richest vegan source of K2. Gut bacteria also make some K2. Vitamin K deficiency is very rare in healthy adults.
Take a K2 supplement only for a specific reason agreed with your doctor. If you take anticoagulants (for example acenocoumarol or warfarin), keep your vitamin K intake steady and do not start supplements without advice. K2 does not replace B12 or vitamin D.
