Is vitamin D3 vegan?

Short answer

Often no, if it is made from lanolin (sheep’s wool). Vegan D3 can come from lichen; D2 is plant-derived. Read the supplement label.

Most cheap D3 is lanolin. NIH describes D2 and D3 as vitamin D forms; veganism is about the source.

In Poland adults are advised to take 1000–2000 IU of vitamin D a day for most of the year (2023 guidelines). Veganism only changes the source: vegan D3 from lichen works the same as lanolin D3.
