Auchan Poland without cage eggs. "Threes" disappeared from the shelves on September 1st.

As of September 1, 2026, Auchan Polska no longer sells fresh eggs from cage farming — including foreign brands, not just its own. Three systems remain on the shelves: barn, free-range, and organic.

The chain committed to phasing out cages back in 2017, withdrew them from its own brand in 2021, and then from e-commerce. Now it has closed them in brick-and-mortar stores. Exception: in a few franchise stores, "cage eggs" may still appear — this is due to the specifics of that sales model.

This is not an isolated move. Cage eggs have already been removed from the shelves by Biedronka, Lidl, Żabka, Kaufland, Netto, and Aldi. However, the market is still cage-based: in March 2026, 61.5% of laying hens in Poland were kept in cages. Dino temporarily reintroduced "cage eggs" this year, citing price as the reason.

The Open Cages Association estimates that the demand from networks of this format translates to the lives of about 400,000 hens per year — and that these birds will avoid cramped cages. This is a step in the right direction.
