Is vinegar vegan?

Short answer

Yes, almost always. Vinegar comes from fermenting alcohol (grapes, apples, grain). Exceptions are balsamic with honey, or products fined with gelatin — rare on supermarket shelves.

Wine, apple, spirit and rice vinegars are vegan. Vinegar-based sauces (soy sauce, Worcestershire without anchovy) need a separate check because they are blends.

Homemade vinegar from wine is vegan unless that wine was fined with fish — for industrial vinegar this trace is practically irrelevant.
