Are crisps / chips vegan?
Short answer
It depends. Many popular crisps are 100% plant-based, but just as many hide animal-derived ingredients — sometimes in very unexpected flavours. The vegan’s golden shopping rule: always read the ingredients on the pack.
What to watch for in crisp ingredients?
Even when the flavour does not suggest anything animal-derived, traps often lurk on the ingredients list:
Dairy derivatives: Whey powder, milk powder, lactose, buttermilk or cheese. This is the most common reason crisps are not vegan. You will find them in cheese and sour-cream-and-onion flavours, and not infrequently (which can be a surprise) they are added to paprika crisps to boost the flavour. On the label they are usually bolded as allergens, which makes them easier to spot quickly.
Honey: Often appears in BBQ (barbecue) or honey-mustard flavours.
Meat flavourings: Though rare, some crisps may contain an actual meat extract or animal fat (frying itself is usually done in plant oils: sunflower, rapeseed or palm).
