Is honey vegan?
Short answer
No. Bees make honey for the hive, not for toast. Veganism excludes animal products — including beeswax and pollen. Swaps: maple, date syrup, agave.
The Vegan Society treats honey like any other animal product. Bees store nectar for winter; commercial hives often take that store and feed sugar water. Some practices clip the queen’s wings or replace her after a year or two (she typically lives longer).
Apiary scale does not change the category: honey still comes from insects. “Local honey for immunity” is a separate health choice, not proof that honey became vegan. In the kitchen, maple, date syrup, agave or just dates in porridge work.
