Are mushrooms vegan?

Short answer

Yes. Mushrooms are fungi, not animals. Button mushrooms, porcini, shiitake and oyster mushrooms are fully vegan.

The question comes back because mushrooms “are not plants”. Veganism concerns animals (kingdom Animalia), not fungi. Mushroom farming does not exploit animals.

Practical note: mushroom soup in a restaurant may sit on meat stock or cream. The mushrooms are fine; the dish may not be.
