Is the soy sold in Poland GMO?
Short answer
GM food must be labelled in the EU. If tofu, tempeh or a soy drink has no such label, its GMO content does not exceed the threshold for adventitious, technically unavoidable presence (0.9%). In Poland, GM soy goes mainly into animal feed.
EU rules: any product that contains, consists of or is produced from GMOs must say so on the label. The exception is adventitious, technically unavoidable presence of up to 0.9% of an ingredient. Meat, milk and eggs from animals fed GM feed, however, do not have to be labelled.
Poland imports large amounts of genetically modified soybean meal for feed, mainly for poultry and pigs; the national ban on using it has been postponed to 1 January 2030. Growing MON 810 GM maize is banned in Poland. For certainty, choose products labelled “GMO-free” or organic – GMOs are not allowed in organic farming.
