Is a vegan diet safe in pregnancy?

Short answer

Yes, if it is planned: B12, iodine, iron, folate, D, omega-3 and enough energy. Pregnancy is a time for a dietitian, not a detox experiment.

Dietetic bodies consider a vegan pregnancy possible. Key pieces: prenatal supplementation (folate, D, iodine, B12), iron based on bloodwork, algal DHA, calcium from fortified drinks or calcium-set tofu.

Nausea makes legumes hard — smoothies, silken tofu and porridges help. Your clinician should know about the diet to order the right labs, not to scare you.
