Are plant-based meat alternatives healthy?

Short answer

It depends which one. This is a very broad category — from chickpea or lentil burgers with a short ingredients list, to highly processed patties full of soy protein isolate, coconut oil and a long list of additives. The latter can be processed just as heavily as an ordinary fast-food hamburger. The word 'vegan' on the pack is not the same as 'healthy' — it is worth simply reading the ingredients.

The BDA stresses that the base of a plant diet is unprocessed food. Meat analogues are a convenient option, not a duty. There is no single study result for “all vegan burgers”. Read the salt and the ingredients.

The ultra-processed food (UPF) debate covers diets with meat too: nuggets, deli meat and processed cheese are not healthy because of a label. A pea burger can be UPF — and still a practical swap at a barbecue. Trouble starts when analogues crowd legumes, grains and vegetables out of the whole week.
