Is gelatin vegan?

Short answer

No. Gelatin is protein from animal bones, skin or connective tissue. Vegan gelling agents include agar, pectin, carrageenan or starch-based jellies.

If a label lists gelatin, the source is animal unless a plant alternative is named instead.

Some hydrocolloids get marketed like gelatin. Read the ingredient list, not “gluten-free” claims.
