Is shellac (E904) vegan?

Short answer

No. Shellac is a resin from the secretion of Kerria lacca insects, used as a glaze on sweets and tablets.

E904 is an insect-derived additive. Vegan glazes are plant waxes or synthetic coatings without shellac.

Not every shiny sugar coating contains shellac — read the ingredients.
