Is lactose vegan?

Short answer

Not as an ingredient — lactose is milk sugar. Vegan products do not contain it. Someone with lactose intolerance may still eat lactose-free dairy, which is not vegan.

Lactose is sometimes a carrier in tablets and flavour mixes. If unsure: the leaflet or the manufacturer.

Trace amounts in medicines are where veganism “as far as possible and practicable” matters.
