Is sugar vegan?

Short answer

It depends on refining. Cane sugar is sometimes filtered with bone char, especially in parts of the US market. EU table sugar is mostly beet sugar, which does not use bone char.

Bone char is cattle-bone charcoal used to decolourise some cane sugar. Organic and vegan-certified sugars typically avoid it.

In Poland most table sugar is beet. Imported cane sugar and sweets can still be a “depends” if the producer is silent.
