Eating out
How do you handle family parties and weddings as a vegan?
Short answer
Tell the hosts clearly and early. Offer a specific dish you will bring. At a wedding, call the couple or caterer and ask for no dairy and eggs, not just “no meat”.
The worst script is “we will make you a salad”. The best: one hot pulse dish on the shared table. People eat vegan more gladly when it is not a punishment plate.
Alcohol: wines and beers may be fined. At a wedding you do not have to interrogate the bartender over every glass if that drains you — veganism includes “as far as practicable”.
