Eating out

What can a vegan order at a kebab shop?

Short answer

Falafel, if it is fried without lard and not egg-battered. Ask about the sauce (garlic sauce is often yoghurt or mayo) and whether the grill is shared with meat. More Polish kebab shops now offer falafel and seitan.

A standard meat kebab has no vegan “just leave the meat out” version — bread plus salad is not a meal. Look for shops with a separate falafel pan or a veg fryer.

Sauce: chilli-based hot sauce is often fine; white sauces almost never. Hummus and tahini — yes. Salad cheese in a kebab — no.
