Do vegans go to zoos and circuses?
Short answer
The vast majority of vegans do not go to traditional circuses or zoos. Veganism is a philosophy that goes beyond diet — its foundation is opposition to all exploitation, captivity and use of animals for human entertainment or profit.
Circuses with animals
They are rejected outright by the vegan community. Animal shows involve training based on dominance or fear, long transport in cramped cages, and conditions completely at odds with the nature of the species. Vegans are happy to choose modern and acrobatic circuses that feature only people.
Zoos
The attitude to zoos is similar — most vegans avoid them, seeing keeping animals confined in limited space as a form of commercial captivity for the amusement of visitors. Although some zoos run endangered-species programmes, the criticism focuses on the fact that the entertainment and display function still comes first.
What instead?
People on a plant-based diet are happy to support and visit alternative places:
Shelters and animal sanctuaries: Places where animals rescued from farms, slaughterhouses or poor conditions (companion animals as well as farmed or wild ones) live safely until a natural death, and their welfare is the only priority.
Reserves and national parks: Watching animals in their natural environment from a distance that is safe for them.
