In Poland, must a preschool, school or hospital provide vegan meals?
Short answer
From 1 September 2026, Polish preschools and schools that provide meals must offer children who do not eat animal products a plant-based alternative on meat and fish days. In Polish hospitals a vegan diet is one of the standard diets, and the doctor decides on its use.
Schools and preschools: the Health Minister’s regulation (Journal of Laws 2026, item 197) also requires a legume-based lunch without animal products at least once a week. The National Centre for Nutrition Education explains that for a vegan child the whole lunch, including soup, should be plant-based, and that parents declare the need. Submit a written declaration to the school.
Hospitals: the hospital nutrition standard (Journal of Laws 2025, item 1780) has applied since 2026, and hospitals had to comply by 1 September 2026. The doctor chooses the diet, taking into account the patient’s preferences, including those based on worldview, if their health allows. The ministry’s model diets include a vegan diet for adults, pregnant and breastfeeding women, and children. Mention your diet on admission.
