Is silk vegan?

Short answer

No. Silk is fibre from silkworm cocoons; in typical production the pupae die inside them. The vegan definition covers clothing, so silk is out.

The Vegan Society includes clothing. Peace silk / ahimsa silk is sometimes marketed as gentler; it is still an insect product.

Whether someone wears old silk from a wardrobe is a personal line, not a change of definition.
