Basics
What is the difference between vegetarian and vegan?
Short answer
Vegetarian diets exclude meat and usually fish, but allow eggs and/or dairy. Veganism also excludes eggs, dairy, honey and other animal products. In shops, “vege” is not vegan.
The Vegan Society definition is broader than the plate. On a food label, ingredients and certification count.
People use the words loosely. Always check the ingredients, not the front-of-pack slogan.
